The 13th Annual IREM Gala was held on Friday, May 18th and it was yet another glamorous evening filled with good food, good drinks and good company. We once again enjoyed the music provided by the talented band MILLENNIUM! A record number 325 were in attendance for this fabulous evening.

In the past twelve years combined, we have given an unbelievable $586,000 to Special Love for Children with Cancer. This year, we were able to present them with a check for $82,000!

It's more like a quarter of a million now.

Since 1983, the Pediatric Oncology Branch (POB) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has provided medical and nursing care to children at Camp Fantastic. Camp Fantastic is a week-long adventure for children ages 7-17 years, who are undergoing treatment, or are within 3 years of their last cancer treatment, or are within 5 years of their bone marrow transplantation for cancer. The camp is run in cooperation with Special Love, Inc., a non-profit organization providing unique experiences for children with cancer and their families.

The Principal Investigator for this protocol and the camp Medical Director is Dr. Stephen Chanock.

NIH Director Francis Collins donned a dragon hat recently when he visited Camp Fantastic (Front Royal, Va.) to help campers celebrate the theme Medieval Magic. The weeklong camp lets children in all stages of cancer treatment shed their cancer image and feel like normal kids again. Camp Fantastic, in its 31st year, is the hallmark program of Special Love, a nonprofit organization that provides cancer families a network of support.

..“We draw doctors and nurses from NCI, NHLBI, and the CC, as well as from regional hospitals that send kids to the camp,” said Chanock. NCI/NICHD nurse Tamara Jenkins and NIH Children’s Inn director Kathy Russell “oversee, plan, and coordinate the camp.”

Robert Merritt Chanock (July 8, 1924 – July 30, 2010) was an American pediatrician and virologist who made major contributions to the prevention and treatment of childhood respiratory infections in more than 50 years spent at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

He joined the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, where he discovered the human respiratory syncytial virus, which is the cause of respiratory tract infections in children each winter, and is one of the most common causes of illness...Chanock was named head of the NIAID's Laboratory of Infectious Diseases in 1968. Researchers working with Chanock developed vaccines to prevent adenovirus infection, Hepatitis A and rotavirus, the most common cause of severe diarrhoea in infants and young children, as well as an influenza virus vaccine in the form of a nasal spray. Efforts were underway to create a vaccine to deal with dengue fever, though efforts to create immunizations for para-influenza viruses and respiratory syncytial virus were unsuccessful.
