Since 1983, the Pediatric Oncology Branch (POB) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has provided medical and nursing care to children at Camp Fantastic. Camp Fantastic is a week-long adventure for children ages 7-17 years, who are undergoing treatment, or are within 3 years of their last cancer treatment, or are within 5 years of their bone marrow transplantation for cancer. The camp is run in cooperation with Special Love, Inc., a non-profit organization providing unique experiences for children with cancer and their families.

The Principal Investigator for this protocol and the camp Medical Director is Dr. Stephen Chanock.

NIH Director Francis Collins donned a dragon hat recently when he visited Camp Fantastic (Front Royal, Va.) to help campers celebrate the theme Medieval Magic. The weeklong camp lets children in all stages of cancer treatment shed their cancer image and feel like normal kids again. Camp Fantastic, in its 31st year, is the hallmark program of Special Love, a nonprofit organization that provides cancer families a network of support.

..“We draw doctors and nurses from NCI, NHLBI, and the CC, as well as from regional hospitals that send kids to the camp,” said Chanock. NCI/NICHD nurse Tamara Jenkins and NIH Children’s Inn director Kathy Russell “oversee, plan, and coordinate the camp.”

Prof. Albert Sabin, developer of the oral polio vaccine and world-famous virologist, was the fourth President of Weizmann Institute, serving between 1970 and 1972. Sabin was also a member of the Institute's Board of Governors for a quarter of a century..

.Distinguished Institute Professor Chaim L. Pekeris, one of the world's authorities on applied mathematics and geophysics, founded the Institute's Applied Mathematics Department, which he headed until 1973. Concurrently, he organized and managed Israel's first geophysical survey; built the WEIZAC, Israel's first computer and among the most advanced in the world at the time; and established the country's Institute for Petroleum Research and Geophysics.

Prof. Pekeris's research achievements included studies in convection within the earth, propagation of sound in layered media, and the computation of tides on a global scale. Among the many honors bestowed upon him was the Vetlesen Prize in Geophysics, considered to be the "Nobel Prize" in this field.

Chaim Leib Pekeris (June 15, 1908 – February 24, 1993)[1] was an Israeli-American physicist and mathematician. He made notable contributions to geophysics and the spectral theory of many-electron atoms, in particular the Helium atom. He was also one of the designers of the first computer in Israel, WEIZAC.

In 1934 Pekeris joined the faculty at M.I.T. as an instructor in geophysics in the Department of Geology. He became a US citizen in 1938.[4] Pekeris remained at M.I.T until 1941 when he moved to the Hudson Laboratories of Columbia University to conduct military research. In 1946 he joined the Institute for Advanced Study.

He received the Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society in 1980, and the Israel Prize from the State of Israel in 1981.[2] Teddy Kollek, the mayor of Jerusalem from 1965 to 1993, said 1990: "I have told you a lot about Chaim Pekeris tonight and there is much more that I could tell, but you will understand that there are reasons that I can’t. Let me simply say that Chaim Pekeris played a most significant role in the establishment of the State of Israel.

Later on, as is usually the case with technological evolution, the WEIZAC was superseded by GOLEM, a new series of computers (we swear we didn’t make that up) which continued to serve the research needs of the Weizmann Institute and other Israeli research institutes.

Chaim Pekeris won quite a few awards and received recognition for his work and contribution to science in Israel and around the world. Among other things, he was awarded the Weizmann Prize for Exact Sciences in 1958, and in 1965, he won the Rothschild Award. In 1974, Columbia University awarded him the Vetlesen Prize and in 1980, he won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. In the same year, he was also awarded the Israel Prize for Physics. A search of his name on the National Library website allows us a glimpse into the wider circles of Pekeris’ life: his prominence in the scientific community on the one hand, and his involvement and relationships with intellectuals from varied fields (S.Y. Agnon, Gershom Scholem…) on the other.

Sabin trained in internal medicine, pathology, and surgery at Bellevue Hospital in New York City from 1931–1933. In 1934, he conducted research at The Lister Institute for Preventive Medicine in England, then joined the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now Rockefeller University). During this time, he developed an intense interest in research, especially in the area of infectious diseases.

In 1939, he moved to Cincinnati Children's Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. During World War II, he was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and helped develop a vaccine against Japanese encephalitis. Maintaining his association with Children's Hospital, by 1946, he had also become the head of Pediatric Research at the University of Cincinnati. At Cincinnati's Children's Hospital, Sabin supervised the fellowship of Robert M. Chanock, whom he called his "star scientific son."

Efforts were underway to create a vaccine to deal with dengue fever, though efforts to create immunizations for para-influenza viruses and respiratory syncytial virus were unsuccessful.
