Re Smithsonian Folk...Yesterday, I went down to the Mall to have lunch with Alice Waters, who is in town for the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival. You may know of Alice, she’s the (legendary) owner of Chez Panisse, out in Berkeley, Ca. and she is the founder of the “edible schoolyard” movement.
This year’s Folk Life Festival has “Food and Community” as a focus, so there are lots of chefs in town who, along with champions like Alice, are trying to get a conversation going about America’s food systems, our school meals programs, and support for local farmers....
DCCK is also very interested in schools, and the 80,000 school cafeterias that sit idle each afternoon and weekend. At lunch we talked about how we might partner, both nationally and here in DC where we hope to do a joint effort in a public school. There are a TON of great efforts already going on, and true to our mantra (“it’s already here”) we hope to build on the work of others, while also contributing our unique spin. In our case, it’s getting kids involved in doing community service in their schools, rather than coming to programs like DCCK. There is already a waiting list for Meals on Wheels in 40% of American cities…and there are 78 million boomers who are about to begin aging out. We hope to get a new generation of kids involved in cooking and delivering meals—maybe made with food they’ve grown in their edible schoolyard.
I’m about to become the Chair of the Mayor’s Commission on Nutrition…and one of our first efforts will be to jump into school meals. LOTS of folks will contribute, and LOTS of folks will benefit…which is just as it should be.

Lunch for Today, Food for the Future
a rousing keynote by His Royal Highness Prince Charles. Seedling Projects collaborated with Bon Appetit Management Company and D.C. non-profits, with the generous support of Kaiser Permanente, to produce a lunch that continued the conversations sparked by the panelists and speakers over a family-style meal.
Hand-decorated bay leaves. The children from E.W. Stokes public charter school and Martha’s Table donated their youthful artistic talents to decorate 350 bay leaves that sprang to life at each place setting. The leaf decoration, coordinated by Farm to Desk D.C. coordinator Peter Nalli, was integrated into a lesson on herbs.
