‘Dolly’ de Rothschild was an English philanthropist who, with her husband, James (‘Jimmy’) de Rothschild, heir to the French branch of the banking family, was a longtime supporter of Israel. She facilitated her husband's gift of funds to build the Knesset, funded the artwork to be housed there and presented a new Supreme Court building.
A private person who did not like to be photographed, the present portrait was highly prized by her cousin, Lord Victor de Rothschild.
