Archiving Google Maps

 

To archive Google Maps, you have to go through the website urlbox.io

First, get the URL of the Google map image you want. I haven't figured out how to do it with mapstreetview.com yet so you will have to go though google.com for now. Take the best security measures that you can, such as using a VPN. For this example, I will use the July 2017 image of Besta Pizza that @5c4RFAC3 requested.

Second, make sure the street view image is not zoomed in. If you can try it zoomed in, but URLbox only pulls data for the screenshot for a certain amount of time. Zoomed-in images often take too long to load for URLbox to capture them.

Third, copy the Google URL and paste it in the "try it now" spot on urlbox.io. Don't worry, you don't need to make an account, the free trial will work just fine.

Fourth, after it takes the screenshot, copy the new URL below the image (not the one above the image) and paste it in archive.is. Otherwise, click on the new screenshot. The new screenshot will appear full-screen and you can copy the URL from your address bar and paste it in archive.is, as it is the same new screenshot URL.

Unless you have the exact URLbox link, don't expect to find the image when you search on archive.is because the original Google Map address will have / instead of %2F and other symbol changes. Because of that, make sure you keep track of the new archive.is link. At least the image is verified by the original URL appearing in the URLbox URL.

How to search comments: site: Voat.co

Google site search, with different combinations of usernames and key words, and just poke around, sometimes several pages into the search results.

Sometimes put quotes around the keywords. If trying to find a reply made to another user, put @ in front of their name, try a "+" between the keywords. Google does crawl comments.

 

 

Archiving VOAT posts:

Here's what I do:

First, at the top of the archive.is page is a link to download a plug-in for the toolbar of your browser that creates a button that automatically archives whatever page you're on if you click it. It makes it very very handy.

Second, you can archive the entire comment thread in one fell swoop by going to the very last comment, clicking the link button, and then appending /0/ to the end of the url and refreshing the page. That will open the entire comment thread. Then you click the archive.is toolbar button and voila! For a thread that branches out into multiple separate fingers at the bottom, you have to go to the last comment in the bottom of each finger and archive separately (i.e. it's linear).

If you want to just open a string of three or four comments in a longer thread, go to the bottom one, click link, and append ?=3 to the end of the url (or however many comments you want to include), then archive. This is handy for focusing on the relevant part of a long chain of replies. I like to think of these as "payload" archives.

I think it is wonderful. Although I can't see myself using the feature for anything other than mischief.

If you know of a way for me to 'not e-money' some love to you and yours, would you please let me know.

I really want to show that I love you without fucking it up too badly, bitcoin is not my friend.
