Sphinx Search at Craigslist

"
Well, I guess the cat's out of the bag! My first project at Craigslist was replacing MySQL FULLTEXT indexing with Sphinx. It wasn't the easiest road in the world, for a variety of reasons, but we got it all working and it's been humming along very well ever since. And I learned a heck of a lot about both Sphinx and craigslist internals in the process too" - Andrew Aksyonoff
Craigslist?

If you do a search for Craigslist (now that we can haha) in this Pizzagate subverse , you'll find we have 3 pages of posts

So.. just checking.. who is Andrew Aksyonoff?

2009 article https://blog.hubpages.com/2009/05/04/an ... -hubpages/
The man behind Sphinx Search is Andew Aksyonoff, a software engineer who lives in Russia and has been working on Sphinx since 2001. He’s been getting a lot of attention ever since Craigslist chose sphinx as their solution to internal search

This past week Andrew traveled to the Bay Area and I was fortunate enough to get on his busy calendar. I had hoped to show him the HubPages office but a taxi driver had dropped him off too far away. He had just an hour but that was enough time for me, Andrew, and one of Andrew’s friends to grab a coffee and chat a little about Sphinx, HubPages, and San Francisco.

For those interested, we went to the Blue Bottle Cafe for coffee (one of San Francisco’s best known cafes), stopped at the Westfield Mall to take a look at the Dome, took a short walk around the Yerba Buena Gardens, and then stopped for a very short time at the SF Moma Museum Store.

I told Andrew how much we at HubPages appreciated his work. If you have any feedback on the HubPages internal search, please feel free to post your comments to this blog.

Craigslist founder Craig Newmark

2018 : Craig Newmark Discusses Philanthropy and Investigative Journalism https://blog.epic.org/2018/09/24/craig- ... ournalism/
Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist and EPIC Advisor, was invited to the National Press Club Headliners Luncheon to discuss his new philanthropic interest in journalism. Newmark recently made a $20 million-dollar pledge to The Markup – a non-profit news organization focused on investigating technology’s growing impact on society.

..Newmark would like to see a resurgence of more news organizations adhering to ethical standards of reporting – like thorough fact-checking and in-depth research. “A trustworthy press is the immune system of democracy.” He said, quoting his childhood teacher. “We do need reporters keeping people honest.”

So, what’s next for Craig Newmark Philanthropies? The short answer: It’s open for discussion, because Newmark plans to do much more. He encouraged others to visit the website and reach out. “We need to support good groups more.” He said. “I plan to do this only as long as I live. After that…it’s over.”
EPIC is a public interest research center in Washington, DC. EPIC was established in 1994 to focus public attention on emerging privacy and civil liberties issues and to protect privacy, freedom of expression, and democratic values in the information age. Visit EPIC at epic.org.

2 posts mentioning CEO Jim Buckmaster

Found more Craig Newmark links to Clintons https://searchvoat.co/v/pizzagate/1585636
I've been researching Craig Newmark/Jim Buckmaster all day. The tie is this: Craigslist is a global organization, fully capable of organizing and coordinating trafficking. I found an article (will be organizing, this is all still new in research stages) where C.N. admitted carting Bill Clinton around in his private jet. Found another article on a project called "Ungrounded" sponsored by British Airways, and in attendance was Google reps, Clinton Global Initiative, NASA, William "Whurley" Hurley (Austin Chaotic Moon Studios), and Craig Newmark. The trip landed in Norway. C.N. has also carted Clinton back n forth to South America in his jet. Craig Newmark has ties to Obama, Hillary, Bill, and the whole clan. I tried searching Epsteins flight logs to see if there were any references to C.N or Jim Buckmaster, so far nothing, but not finished looking.

I've known for a long time that craigslist is massive NSA honeypot and data collection effort, or at the very least work with the NSA and other intelligence agencies...

Austin entrepreneur to get ‘UnGrounded’ on innovation flight - https://eu.statesman.com/story/business ... 843050007/
Some people use a long flight to try to get a little work done in between naps. This week, about 100 business leaders and creative thinkers will use an 11-hour transatlantic flight to try to solve some of the biggest problems facing the tech industry.

The program, called “UnGrounded,” is an initiative from British Airways that will launch with a Tuesday flight from Silicon Valley to London.

William “Whurley” Hurley of Austin’s Chaotic Moon Studios will be among the group of passengers that includes Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and others from Google, the Clinton Global Initiative and NASA.

The passengers will split into teams to tackle specific areas, put together their solutions and present them at the London DNA (Decide Now Act) Summit. The findings will also be presented to the secretary general of the ITU, which is the United Nations’ agency for information and communication technologies.

Hurley said the mid-air event, which he describes as a hackathon minus distractions, will bring together some heavy thinkers in an opportunity to create concrete solutions for problems like getting more women into early STEM education programs and bringing technology opportunities to emerging economies.

Two teams for UnGrounded have been announced on the website for the initiative. Hurley’s team is called “Altitude” and will specifically address the challenge of helping more women get into the tech industry. Another announced set of participants, “Team Ground Control” will tackle STEM issues in emerging economies.

While many of the passengers will be from Silicon Valley, Hurley said he plans to bring some of Austin’s culture with him on the flight.

“I view Austin as one of the leaders in involving women in tech,” he said. “With Girlstart, women software development groups and gaming groups, I feel like in our culture we’re already very actively working to address this. I think I’ll be able to bring a lot of ideas from our community to this global community.”

In addition to the invited passengers, the website Mashable held a contest for innovative ideas that earned 10 of its readers spots on the flight as well.
How interesting..

I've seen that event before.. in this post:

Craig Newmark: 'Disinformation' responsible for COVID-19 deaths in US
One of the main culprits in the disinformation campaign, Newmark believes, is Russia, which is working through agents in various countries. https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/craig-ne ... -us-685373

The founder of craigslist has said that foreign and domestic disinformation campaigns are responsible for some of the COVID-19 deaths in the US.
In a wide-ranging interview with The Jerusalem Post, Craig Newmark explained that America is being targeted by a modern form of warfare: Disinformation. And he says that it is a bigger deal than people think.

“Influence operations, both foreign and domestic, disrupted [America’s] response to the pandemic,” Newmark says. “They delayed it, and they destroyed whatever preparations we had. That’s why a lot more people died in the US.”..

Through his foundation, Newmark attempts to promote trustworthy journalism, counter disinformation, combat influence operations that destabilize the US and secure the Internet and related systems from cybersecurity attacks.

Newmark says that he is just an “amateur,” and through his funding, he can help others.

“My job,” he explains, “is to help fund studies and then to remind the people doing the work to protect themselves, because the work they’re doing has already gotten under the skin of our foreign adversaries.”

March 29, 2018//-With the support of Craig Newmark Philanthropies, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is expanding its TruthBuzz initiative, designed to find new ways to help verified facts reach the widest possible audience.

The initial TruthBuzz contest uncovered exciting and effective methods for countering disinformation and sharing instantly understandable fact-checking.

Now, TruthBuzz 2.0 will bring these and other innovative fact-checking techniques to newsrooms in five of the most populous nations: Brazil, India, Indonesia, Nigeria and the United States. TruthBuzz will embed experts in these outlets to help reporters adopt compelling storytelling methods that improve the reach and impact of fact-checking. The goal is to fight misleading information and build trust with audiences. These TruthBuzz Fellows will collaborate on projects and share novel approaches.

“Now that we’ve discovered some key ways to help the truth go viral, we want to spread the word to newsrooms far and wide,” said ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan. “We aim to have news organizations share fact-checked information in a compelling way.”..

ICFJ will also collaborate on TruthBuzz with First Draft, a project of the Shorenstein Center at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. First Draft will provide additional training in target countries on how to verify information and debunk falsehoods. TruthBuzz Fellows will develop case studies to help news outlets in other countries carry out the same mission.

2022 : Craig Newmark Philanthropies Pledges $50 Million to Cyber Civil Defense
https://www.globalcyberalliance.org/cyb ... l-defense/
The grants from CNP, the charitable network of craigslist founder Craig Newmark, will focus on building the civic infrastructure, policy frameworks, and digital tools necessary to support what Newmark calls a “cyber civil defense” effort to bolster American national and global security in the face of new threats.

This effort is part of Newmark’s long-standing commitment to supporting digital security. CNP has already awarded more than $30 million in recent years to organizations involved in the initiative, including Black Girls Hack, Girls Who Code, R Street’s Making Space Initiative, Shadowserver, the Stanford Internet Observatory, the Technology and Social Change Project at Harvard’s Kennedy School, VetsInTech, and Wikipedia. The organization aims to give the remaining $20 million in the next year.

..Grants announced this week include resources for Consumer Reports, the Global Cyber Alliance, and the Ransomware Task Force at the Institute of Security and Technology.

CNP’s Cyber Civil Defense effort will be managed by the Aspen Institute’s digital and technology program, Aspen Digital. Newmark is already personally involved in the effort to curate tools, programs, and customer service offerings modeled after some of the approaches that have helped make craigslist an enduring corner of the internet for more than two decades.

..“Craig’s philanthropic commitments have been critical to making progress on some of the most pressing issues today in cybersecurity,” said the Hewlett Foundation’s Cyber Initiative Director, Kelly Born...

“Craig’s incredible generosity, and his continued focus on efforts to help protect our nation from cyber threats gives true meaning to collective cyber defense. Investment in cyber education and cyber resilience has never been more important,” said Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Jen Easterly.
