There are three hares and only three ears, and yet each hare has two.

The Three-Hares-Window in the late Gothic cloister of the Paderborn
Cathedral is not only one of the town’s landmarks but at the same time the
most famous Three-Hares-Motif in Germany.
The hare is a popular motif in both Christian as well as profane art. It can often be found, for
instance, in paintings and other pieces of art, and it holds a versatile imagery. In non-sacral art,
the hare is often used to represent the prey animal on depictions of hunting scenes. Usually, it
can also be seen on spring or fall images where the springing hare stands for happiness. Due to
its distinct reproductive instinct, the hare is often interpreted to be a symbol of fertility and
physical love....

Frequently, hares can be found in a group of three. They are
rarely ever absent from depictions of Creation and have therefore
become a symbol for the Trinity of God. The arrangement of
three hares in a circle, as in the famous Three-Hares-Window in
Paderborn, however, is an exception. When looking at the
window, not the animals themselves should be in the viewer’s
focus but rather their ears: Each hare has two ears, although
there are only three ears in the whole picture. Through this
connection, a circle is formed.

This special Three-Hares-Motif can often be encountered in Germany, for example, in the coat
of arms of the municipality of Hasloch, in the monastery of Hardehausen near Paderborn as well
as in the Cathedral of Münster. However, there are many examples of the motif in other
countries and cultures all over the world. The three hares are present in other European
countries, for instance, in Switzerland as a painting from 1529 at the church of Lauen near
Gstaad, in the monastery of Muotathal near Schwyz or as part of a wrought-iron fence in the
village museum of Riehen which is situated between Basel and Lörrach. In France, the hares
can be found in the late Gothic Palais des Maison du Cardinal Jouffroy in Luxeuil-les-Bains and
in the courtyard of the Alsatian St.-Peter-and-Paul church in Wissembourg...In Great Britain, the
motif of the three hares in a circle can be encountered in numerous churches such as, for
example, the Long Melford Trinity Church in the county of
Suffolk. However, the symbol is also quite popular

In Western Europe
The motif of the three hares is used in a number of medieval or more recent European churches, particularly in France (e.g., in the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière in Lyon)[21] and Germany. It occurs with the greatest frequency in the churches of Devon, England where it appears to be a recollection of earlier Insular Celtic design such as the triaxially symmetric triskele and other Romano-British designs which are known from early British 'Celtic' (La Tène) metalwork such as circular enamelled and openwork triskel brooches (fibulae). The motif appears in illuminated manuscripts amongst similar devices such as the anthropomorphic "beard pullers" seen in manuscripts such as the Book of Kells,[22] architectural wood carving, stone carving, window tracery and stained glass. In South Western England there are over thirty recorded examples of the three hares appearing on 'roof bosses' (carved wooden knobs) on the ceilings in medieval churches in Devon, (particularly Dartmoor). There is a good example of a roof boss of the three hares at Widecombe-in-the-Moor,[8] Dartmoor, with another in the town of Tavistock on the edge of the moor. The motif occurs with similar central placement in Synagogues.[2] Another occurrence is on the ossuary that by tradition contained the bones of St. Lazarus...

As an optical illusion or puzzle
Jurgis Baltrusaitis's 1955 Le Moyen-Âge fantastique. Antiquités et exotismes dans l'art gothique[30] includes a 1576 Dutch engraving with the puzzle given in Dutch and French around the image. This is the oldest known dated example of the motif as a puzzle, with a caption that translates as:

The secret is not great when one knows it.
But it is something to one who does it.
Turn and turn again and we will also turn,

They also appear in the Synagogue from Horb am Neckar (donated to the Israel Museum). The hares are a canting element (Hase) and three hares refer to a local song and were also seen on the local fountain. The two roses are taken from the arms of the Counts von Wertheim, as the village was a possession of the counts from the 13th century until 1556. Their arms were still seen on the local seal in 1730.

Wertheim was founded between the 7th and 8th century. However, the first settlement was a town called Kreuzwertheim on the right bank of the river Main. From the early 12th century onwards, a branch of the noble family of the Reginbodons called themselves after the town. Sataniv (Ukrainian: Сатанів, Russian: Сатанов, Polish: Satanów) is an urban-type settlement in the Horodok Raion, Khmelnytskyi Oblast, Ukraine. Population: 2,367 (2020 est.)..

A Jewish community was organized in Sataniv in the second half of the 16th century, in the kingdom of Poland. Jews in Sataniv were involved in the import of goods from the east, leasing of estates and customs dues, manufacture of alcoholic drinks, and goldsmithery. The town was periodically attacked by the Tatars and Cossacks, including combined attacks in 1651 and from the Cossacks in 1703. The synagogue in Sataniv was built as a fortress to allow the Jews and the wider community to defend themselves in such attacks.

In the 18th century Sataniv was Podolia's leading community. In 1756 its dayyanim (religious judges) held a trial of the Frankists. In 1765 there were 1,369 Jews paying the poll tax in Sataniv. The Jews there were involved in international commerce, traveling to fairs in Leipzig, Breslau, and Frankfurt, until 1793, when Sataniv was incorporated into Russia.

The Hebrew writer and maskil Isaac Satanow lived in Sataniv, and was active there in the latter half of the 18th century. He, Menachem Mendel Lefin, and Alexander b. Ẓevi Margaliot, all of whom also lived in the town, were among the pioneers of the Haskalah movement. From the end of the 18th century and during the 19th, Sataniv was an important center of Hasidism.

Until 1862 the Jewish settlement there was restricted by the authorities, because of Sataniv's closeness to the Austrian border. The Jewish population was 2,848, 64% of the total, in 1897. In 1919, Jews in Sataniv underwent pogroms by Ukrainian nationalists. In 1926 Satanov probably had 2,359 Jews, then declining to 1,516, or 40% of the total population. A rural Jewish council existed in the Soviet period. On 6 July 1941 the Germans entered Sataniv, and on 14 [15(?)] May 1942 they locked 286 Jews into two cellars, letting them suffocate. One of the most enigmatic rabbinic personalities to emerge from the late 1700’s must be R. Isaac Satanow (1732-1804). He was a prolific writer and publisher of seforim. HebrewBooks has about 16 of his works in their database, but he wrote many more. He is referenced numerous times in at least 33 other seforim as an apparently authoritative source. He also received approbations for some of his works from numerous respected rabbis of his generation.

Yet he is regarded by many as a supreme charlatan.

..As a young man, he left his village and travelled to Berlin. There he joined the yeshiva of R. Daniel Itzig[2] where he studied together with the Pri Megadim[3] and R. Tzvi Hirsch Berlin (who later became the Chief Rabbi of Berlin and who is also known for his glosses in the Vilna Edition of the Talmud. ..During this time, R. Satanow was appointed as director of the printing press of the Chevrat Chinuch Ne'arim (Society for the Education of the Youth) which was probably where he acquired his knowledge and skills for his later publications.

Moses Mendelssohn's dreams about a tolerant state became reality in the new French Constitution of 1791. Berr Isaac Berr, the Ashkenazic representative in the Legislative Assembly, praised the French republic as the "Messiah of modern Judaism", because he had to convince French communities for the new plans of a Jewish reform movement to abandon their autonomy..While better conditions were provided by the constitution of the French Republic, the conflict between Orthodox Rabbis and wealthy and intellectual laymen of the reform movement became evident with the radical initiatives by Mendelssohn's friend and student David Friedländer in Prussia.[33] He was the first who followed Mendelssohn's postulations in education, since he founded 1776 together with Isaak Daniel Itzig the Jüdische Freischule für mittellose Berliner Kinder ("Jewish Free School for Impecunious Children in Berlin") and 1778 the Chevrat Chinuch Ne'arim ("Society for the Education of Youth").

Itzig was born in Berlin. His family was mercantile. Itzig was a banker and a mintmaster in partnership with Veitel Heine Ephraim. Together they leased all the mints in Saxony and Prussia. During the Seven Years' War they assisted Frederick the Great in debasing the Saxonian currency[1] and spreading the Ephraimiten, not only in Saxony, but also in Silesia, Poland, Bohemia and Courland.

Itzig was one of the very few Jews in Prussia to receive full citizenship privileges, as a "Useful Jew". He became extraordinarily wealthy as a consequence.

Together with his son in law David Friedlander, Itzig was appointed to lead a committee which was to discuss ways to improve the Jewish civil and social standing in Prussia, which led to the removal of many restrictions. He funded early members of the Haskalah secular movement, including Rabbi Israel of Zamosch (Moses Mendelssohn's teacher), Samuel Rominow (an Italian Jewish artist) and Isaac Satanow.

In 1761 he began planning a school for poor Jewish boys in Berlin, and in 1778 his son together with Daniel Friedlander opened the first "free school" (Freischule) called "Hinuch Neorim", Hebrew: 'Teaching the Youth'. The school and adjacent printing house later became one of the main institutions of the Haskalah movement.
