Following a meeting in New York with school friend Fred Robinson, Bernays became coeditor of Medical Review of Reviews and Dietetic and Hygienic Gazette in 1912. They took editorial positions in favor of showers and against corsets, and distributed free copies to thousands of physicians across the country. Two months later they took up the cause of Damaged Goods, an English translation of Les Avariés by Eugène Brieux. After publishing a positive review of the play, Bernays and Robinson wrote to its lead actor, Richard Bennett: "The editors of the Medical Review of Reviews support your praiseworthy intention to fight sex-pruriency in the United States by producing Brieux's play Damaged Goods. You can count on our help."

The play controversially dealt with venereal disease and prostitution—Bernays called it "a propaganda play that fought for sex education."[15] He created the "Medical Review of Reviews Sociological Fund Committee" and successfully solicited the support of such elite figures as John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt, Reverend John Haynes Holmes, and Anne Harriman Sands Rutherford Vanderbilt, wife of William Kissam Vanderbilt.

With an interest in the occult piqued at an early age by Frank L Baum’s Oz books, by the 1950s Anger was travelling the Satanic grottoes of Europe – voyaging firstly through Italy to make a film about the sixteenth century occultist Cardinal d’Este, before emerging in Paris around 1955 (where he met Jean Cocteau). He continued to produce short films, filming 20 minutes of footage for his film Rabbit’s Moon (set under a blue filter, it involves a clown longing for the moon) at the Films du Pantheon Studio. When the studio closed the production down, footage was stored in the labyrinthine archive of the Cinémathèque Française.

In 1955 Anger spent three months in Cefalu, Sicily to shoot a documentary about Aleister Crowley’s frescoes in Thelema Abbey. The Abbey of Thelema was a small villa establised as a temple and spiritual centre by Crowley in 1920. The name was taken from Rabelais’ satire Gargantua and Pantagruel, where the Abbey of Thélème was an ‘anti-monastery’ in which inhabitants spent time “not in laws, statutes, or rules, but according to their own free will and pleasure.”

The purpose of Anger’s ALAC show is in part to shift $300 bomber jackets with “Lucifer” emblazoned across the back, a replica of one worn by Leslie Huggins in his classic Lucifer Rising. It’s also to introduce art fair perusers to the work of two women, Rosaleen Miriam “Roie” Norton, an Australian pantheist known as “the Witch of Kings Cross” and the better-known Marjorie Cameron, a flame-haired woman once married to Jet Propulsion Lab scientist Jack Parsons, the man whose occultist LA-based group, The Gnostic Mass at the Church of Thelema, briefly included Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard in its congregation.

..“She was extraordinary – a genuine witch,” Anger says matter-of-factly. “She had powers. Unusual powers. Extra powers. She kind-of knew things before they happened. She loved a full moon.”

..The half-dozen pictures in the show, including a limited edition of a Crowley print “Do What Thy Wilt”, are organised by Anger’s aide Brian Butler.

In his opinion, Cameron was a bad influence on her husband, who died in a mysterious explosion in 1952, while packing to go on holiday, and who has now been largely written out the history of rocket development. “She turned him on to Satanism. She was very dominant. The FBI’s assessment was that she’d ruined him.”

The board of John D. Rockefeller's eponymous foundation met for the first time 100 years ago this month, in May 1913. The size and mission of the Rockefeller Foundation were unprecedented. With its initial pot of US$100 million (equal to $2.3 billion today), it aimed to “promote the well-being of mankind throughout the world”.

Rockefeller focused his philanthropy on health, following the recommendation of his first adviser, Frederick T. Gates. “Disease,” said Gates, “is the main source of almost all other human ills, poverty, crime, ignorance, vice, inefficiency, hereditary taint, and many other evils.”

...Two things helped the foundation to dominate scientific research for its first four decades: the changes wrought by the First World War and an innovative group of foundation officers. The war decimated European dominance in science, offering an opening for the Rockefeller Foundation to rebuild and develop medicine and public health internationally as the US government pursued a policy of isolationism.

..The height of the foundation's influence was in the 1920s and 1930s. After making a 5-year, $500,000 grant to the US National Research Council in 1919 for postdoctoral fellowships in chemistry and physics, the Rockefeller Foundation began funding its own fellowships for scientists to train at established centres worldwide.

..Another main goal was reform of medical education. Beneficiaries included Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland; Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the University of Toronto in Canada. Among the European recipients were University College London and the medical school at the University of Brussels. The Peking Union Medical College in Beijing was lavishly funded (a total of $45 million was given by 1947) with the explicit goal of creating the 'Johns Hopkins of Asia'. The foundation also gave major grants to medical research institutes in the United States (such as Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut), Canada (to McGill's Montreal Neurological Institute) and Europe (to the Institute of Physiology in Copenhagen and the Tavistock Clinic in London). Funding of the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, Germany, and the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Anthropology, Human Heredity, and Eugenics in Berlin, which conducted eugenic research during the rise of Nazism in the 1930s, brought opprobrium at the time and since.

..The resulting global network of public-health institutions paved the way for the creation in 1948 of the World Health Organization (WHO), a United Nations specialized agency. The WHO built on the worldwide Rockefeller Foundation campaigns against diseases such as hookworm, yellow fever and malaria, leading to the launch of the WHO Global Malaria Eradication Programme in 1955, a precursor to its landmark smallpox eradication campaign, which began a few years later.
