The FAI Legacy Award was presented to Kathy Franklin, a longtime advocate for the organization’s mission of research, education, and advocacy. Ms. Franklin has helped countless families navigate the challenges of living with potentially fatal food allergies.

Julia Koch, Sharyn Mann and Todd Slotkin were the Gala Dinner Chairs. David Koch was the Corporate Dinner Chair. Abbey and Steven Braverman, Patricia and James Cayne, Nina Rennert Davidson and Mitchell Davidson, Judi and Joe Flom, Mary Richardson Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Roxanne and Dean Palin, and Stephanie Winston Wolkoff and David Wolkoff were the Benefit Dinner Chairs. There was a special performance from Broadway’s Million Dollar Quartet. The festivities for this black-tie Gala began at 7:00 PM.

Shake Shack made a big deal earlier this year of returning $10 million in taxpayer funds that it had obtained from the federal Paycheck Protection Program to weather the economic crisis caused by COVID-19. But founder Danny Meyer then scooped up at least $11.4 million for his other restaurant empire, Union Square Hospitality Group.

..Twelve separate Meyer restaurants received PPP loans, including Blue Smoke, Union Square Cafe and Gramercy Tavern.

After news of Shake Shack’s PPP loan emerged in April, Meyer and CEO Randy Garutti announced they were returning the money because they didn’t want to gobble up funds for smaller companies. The company instead planned to raise $75 million from investors by selling shares, CNN reported at the time.

The Shack Shack — and Union Square Hospitality Group — relief funds are at the heart of complaints that the PPP subsidies went to big, high-valued businesses — rather than to struggling smaller companies, or straight to the masses of unemployed American workers.

Patricia Denner Cayne, PhD is a speech and language learning therapist who worked at the League for the Hard of Hearing, Kennedy Child Study Center, and Marymount Manhattan College. She studied with Dr. Anderson at NY's Mount Sinai Hospital learning to perform neuroanatomy autopsies. Her expertise is teaching language to preschoolers who are the deaf or neurologically impaired.

She holds a BA in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania College for Women, as well as master's degrees in both Speech Pathology and Educational Psychology from Columbia University, where she also received a PhD in Psychology. She is a life member of the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA).[1]

She was an active member of the following boards: The U.S. National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIH/NICDCD), the 92nd St Y, and The NY League for the Hard of Hearing.[1] Dr. Cayne has also been on the advisory boards of Sharsheret,[2] the Deafness Research Foundation (DRF), Sonomax Technologies Inc.,[1] the Next for Autism,[3] the Food Allergy Initiative (FAI),[4] Hearing Health Foundation,[5] and Columbia Presbyterian's Gray Matters.[6]

Dr. Cayne's hobbies are decorative painting and competitive bridge. She won her first North American National tournament, the Jacoby Open Swiss Teams, in March 2017. In the 90's, with Kathie Wei-Sender, she organized the bridge matches between Corporate America vs. U.S. Congress and the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

In 1969, Patricia Denner met James Cayne, a national bridge competitor, at a bridge tournament. After Pat gave him an ultimatum: "Get a real job or find a new girlfriend," he joined Bear Stearns as a retail broker.
