Do any of you sorry fuckers know anything about plumbing?

Post by Deleted User 2149 »

I had a guy in to replace the kitchen tap. Now every time I turn on a cold tap anywhere in the house, the boiler fires up. Wtf?

Looked online and it's a thing that's happened to others. Various explanations given. Got the guy to come back. Says he's never seen it in 40 years of plumbing. He fiddled around while I read him the answers I found online. Wasn't able to rectify it.

I'm HIGHLY irritated.

Whoever tells me how to rectify it gets a 1kg bar of silver, but you pay postage :P

Sounds like you might need to put in a separate cold water line to your sink.

Did he touch the main water line at all?
If the boiler fires up when you run cold water, maybe there's a leak in the boiler/lines? Like when you turn the cold on, it lessens the pressure in the line to the tank, and then it leaks. idkwtfimtalkingabout

You do have a cold water line that does connect to the water heater. Look under it and see if there is a drain under it and if there is, try turning on the water to your sink and take a look again. if you have a leak you might need to get a new water heater.

There are no leaks. Didn't happen with previous tap. He turned the pressure down on the cold and it stopped firing when I turn kitchen tap on, but still fires up when I turn cold bath tap on. Something to do with pressure.
Also, if you only turn cold on to a dribble, it doesn't seem to happen. So that's gonna have to be a new rule in the house.

Fucking wonderful.

Well,it might be he hooked up the wrong line to the wrong tap. Does the water turn hot if you leave it on? Does the hot water do the same thing?

No it's no a crossed line. It triggers the pump to turn on but not to heat the cold water.

I am NOT a plumber.
Although it’s not strictly the same problem, this vid does touch on the general issues surrounding anomolies like yours.

Why is my boiler turning on when I turn a cold tap off??

TLDR: talk to the boiler manufacturer tech dept, could be to do with a ‘dead leg’, also suggestions in comments about a ‘shock arrestor’.
