Nicole Junkermann, founder of NJF Capital, recently spoke on how Europe can become the hub linking American and Chinese technology. Ms Junkermann spoke on a panel which focused on the international approach to the ethical and business considerations with developing technologies including big data and artificial intelligence. The panel was part of the Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and Data (RAID) conference in Paris.

As of 2014, it generates annual sales of around three billion Renminbi in over 1,000 branches...With the financial support of United in Sports (Luxembourg), together with three other sports retailers and the support of Robert Louis-Dreyfus, the most important sports retail group with 3,600 branches in China was to be formed in 2006 . The management initially consisted of members of the Chinese founding families, Sandrine Zerbib (former Chief Executive Officer of Adidas Greater China) and Dan Loeb (former Chief Executive Officer Nike Greater China). After all the necessary contracts were negotiated and approved by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) in 2008, the business development through the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing deteriorated, the alliance broke up in discussions about participation levels and the financial contribution of investors.

Found this through Dreyfus..The former, former majority shareholder of Olympique de Marseille, was allegedly co-shareholder, with some of his relatives, of two entities domiciled in the British Virgin Islands (tax haven). These are United in Sports Parallel GP Limited, created on November 6, 2007, and UIS RLD 2 Limited, created one month before his death on June 12, 2009. The two companies were dissolved in 2013.

In early 2018, Human Rights Watch obtained a copy of a mass surveillance app used by police in Xinjiang, in northwest China. In Xinjiang, the Chinese government has subjected 13 million Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims to widespread restrictions, in violation of their basic rights. Checkpoints form a network of virtual fences, restricting movement. Arbitrary detention for behaviors that don’t violate Chinese law, such as purchasing a new SIM card or growing a beard, is commonplace. Up to 1 million people are held in “political education” camps.

The app provides an unprecedented window into mass surveillance in Xinjiang. It aggregates data – from people’s blood type and height, to information about their electricity usage and package deliveries – and alerts authorities when it deems someone or something suspicious. It is part of the Integrated Joint Operations Platform (IJOP), the main system for mass surveillance in Xinjiang. Human Rights Watch “reverse engineered” the app, and Nazish Dholakia spoke to Human Rights Watch senior China researcher Maya Wang about what the process revealed.

The IJOP is a system of systems. It gathers information from, but not limited to, gas stations, checkpoints on the street, and access-controlled areas such as communities and schools. It pulls information from these facilities, as well as CCTV cameras, integrates them, and monitors them for “unusual” activity or behavior that triggers alerts that authorities then investigate. We reported on the IJOP system in February 2018 by pulling together procurement documents. At the time, we found an app that government officials and police officers in Xinjiang use to communicate with the IJOP system. We reverse engineered the app and uncovered the kinds of behaviors and people this mass surveillance system targets, which gives us a window into the inner workings of one of the world’s most intrusive mass surveillance systems.

..Every app has a digital certificate that functions as the signature of the developer. The certificate showed that the app was developed by the company Hebei Far East Communication System Engineering Company (HBFEC). We found another app officially released by HBFEC on a Chinese government website, and when we compared the two, the digital signatures matched. HBFEC was – when the IJOP was deployed – a fully owned subsidiary of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC), a major state-owned military contractor in China. We also know, based on procurement documents, that CETC is the developer of IJOP. So, we were able to verify that the app is developed by HBFEC and used in Xinjiang.

Swarm Technologies has 12 of its tiny SpaceBEE satellites, each about the size of a slice of bread, ready for liftoff on the Vega rocket. The “BEE” in SpaceBEE stands for Basic Electronic Element.

Swarm is developing a low-data-rate satellite communications fleet the company says could be used by connected cars, remote environmental sensors, industrial farming operations, transportation, smart meters, and for text messaging in rural areas outside the range of terrestrial networks.
