If you've been invited to dinner at someone's house, what could you take along if you don't drink alcohol and they're not very boozy either?

Of course I asked and they said "just bring yourself" so no clues were given......

I would bring a bottle or 2 of fruit flavored sparkling water.

Indeed. Bring something that they're bound to consume at one time or other.

Water or chips or whatever.

Not a plant or a vase, since that takes up space and the hosts won't want to throw it away because it was given to them by a guest who might come round later and not find the gift.

How did you get them to say, "just bring yourself"?

Sigh, I need new friends/family. Wanna trade? You'll be cooking half the day!

Sure, but all my cooking is gluten-free vegetarian.

I looked after their high maintenance french bulldog dog for 3 weeks while they travelled abroad (sent vids of him every day, gave him 3 walks and cuddles, etc etc) and they now think I'm the best thing since sliced bread. I also checked on their house, but it was really no trouble.
