You see their livestock grazing by the roadside - even in Cape Town, the best city in the best province. One of the first things international visitors see as the plane comes in to land is the squatter camp (politically correct term: informal settlement) along the N2 road. You have to run the gauntlet along that road to get to wherever you are going. Their goats and cattle stray into the road, desperately looking for tufts of grass by the roadside.
Also, when the plane gets really low, some of them throw rocks and stones at it by way of welcome.

Many years ago, I had a neighbour who worked in TV and used to travel to all kinds of African shitholes to film things. He would be gone ages and I would keep his wife company many an evening. We would cook and hang out waiting for Tom to call and tell us he was still alive. One time while I was there, Tom called and she put him on speakerphone and he told us the story:

They were in Congo or somewhere and were in a "hotel". There was one shared toilet for 10 rooms and it was out of order. The rooms were full of roaches, there was no linen and the power was down. Tom is a seasoned traveller so they had taken cans of bully beef with them. Their arrival had aroused interest from the locals and somehow word got round "town" that they had proper food: meat.

They were all holed up in 1 room for safety and discussing how to get some kind of meal together with their canned goods. Next minute there was a crowd outside the door. They started banging on the door and chanting "meat! meat! meat! meat!"

They ended up having to give some of their food to the mob to stay alive.

I used to love visiting when Tom got home to hear all his stories. His wife was the calmest woman I have ever known.

Kek, this reminds me of this chaotic Vice-documentary. From the time when Vice was still decent.

And then there's this book https://archive.org/details/negroesinnegrola00helpiala/ which talks about all this stuff: slavery, cannibalism, superstitions, and on and on and on.
