A new bill was introduced Thursday to the California Senate that would allow children 12 and older to be vaccinated for COVID-19 without a parent’s approval.
State Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) introduced a bill that would allow children 12 and older to receive COVID-19 vaccinations without the consent of their parents.
Wiener was born to a Jewish family[4] in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in southern New Jersey, the son of small business owners. He graduated from Washington Township High School, received his bachelor's degree from Duke University, studied in Santiago, Chile, on a Fulbright Scholarship, and received his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School. He clerked for Justice Alan B. Handler on the Supreme Court of New Jersey.[5]

Under the new bill (SB 866), introduced by Democrat Senator Scott Wiener, it would also not be a legal requirement for parents to know that their child has received the vaccine.
Wiener said about the proposed legislation:
“This is about empowering teenagers to make decisions on their own health and their own safety.
Almost a million California teenagers are unvaccinated, and for a lot of those teens it’s because their parents either refuse to get them vaccinated or they have not yet gotten around to it.”
“This won’t be the only bill,” Wiener added.
Many parents strongly object to the new proposal, raising concerns about the risks of side effects such as heart inflammation seen mostly in boys and young men.
Dan McDunn, a Berkeley resident, has kids at Berkeley High and Willard Middle School who will not be vaccinated against COVID-19. He calls Wiener’s bill “absolutely insane” and says it takes away his parental rights over his children’s health.
“That’s my job. The bill is a byproduct of the COVID-19 vaccine, and people’s hesitance to participate in an experimental program.
They’re not getting the numbers they want, so they’ve taken the most stringent measures.”
If SB 866 is passed by the Legislature and signed by Newsom, the bill would go into effect on January 1st, 2023
