He said they also stoned a number of vehicles which were passing by on the road.

There's actually a great accuracy to the coon reference. Uneducated city folk often don't see raccoons very often, so when they go camping if they see a raccoon they think it's cute and cuddly and want to pet it. So they feed it table scraps to keep them coming back.
What they don't know is that they're thieves, and are very violent. They can run very fast and will attack domesticated animals. They have little fear of anything and can take several shots from a 12 Gauge before fucking off.
Niggers are much the same way.
