Training for terrorism

Hi all!

This might be a bit of powerlevelling, but anyways:

When I was in secondary school, before 1994, I remember getting extra training on how to handle handgrenades thrown into classrooms, and limpet mines being found at school.

The training was: throw yourself away from the grenade and let the soles of your shoes absorb the shrapnel. The limpet mine traning was to tell a teacher if you saw any.

Anyone else have any experience with this shit? Was it related to the South West Africa situation, or just general life in SA?

That's quite something. We never had any of that.
Maybe you were in a riff raff area?

I was in Stellenbosch, surrounded by exclusive wine estates.

There were no blacks for miles and all the staff were Coloureds.

What the fuck? I lived in Bloem at the time. Was that riff-raff? I understand why everbody hated you and wanted you to leave SA: the constant racism and hatred towards those that didn't own wine estates.

One day, CD5, you'll experience what it is to only have 1 summer house, 2 cars and only 3 maids.

One day.

😆 On a serious note, I think your school had the right idea. Remember that traditionally, the Cape has always been more relaxed and liberal, while the further north you go, the more conservative people are. Generally speaking of course.

Roughly what age where you when this stuff came up at school and how did it make you feel as a child?

I was still about high school age. Pretty young.

Asking how I felt about the whole thing isn't quite correct, since (1) I had no idea there was a war going on and (2) that civilians were being bombed here and there and (3) the military coming for a visit was kinda cool.
