Last week I attended a reception at the Tate Modern which celebrated the acquisition of Execution Noble by Banco Espiritio Santo Group. Two businesses which most people outside the world of banking will never have heard of, but yet it’s a deal which reflects the way the UK is being perceived by the wider world.

New port of call

The City put aside concerns about the swirling Portuguese debt crisis for a night and celebrated Banco Espírito Santo’s London investment banking launch with 600 guests at the Tate Modern on Tuesday.

Keen to diversify away from Portugal, the bank completed the purchase of a majority stake in Nick Finegold’s Execution Noble last November, and has entered the hiring fray for analysts and bankers.

Espírito Santo’s newly appointed UK investment banking chairman Anthony Fry was seen mingling with Aberdeen Asset Management chief Martin Gilbert and Shaftesbury finance director Brian Bickel.

Anthony Fry has spent more than 30 years working around the world as an investment banker for the Rothschild Group, Credit Suisse and Lehman Brothers and is currently senior managing director in the investment banking boutique, Evercore Partners. As Global Head of the Media business and European Head of Telecoms at Credit Suisse, he worked with a number of media organisations including the BBC, BSkyB and Vivendi. He has held a number of non-executive positions at companies including Southern Water, the BSI, Mowlem and is currently on the Boards of Dairy Crest and Control Risk. He also serves on the boards of numerous charitable foundations and academic institutions including SOAS, The Godolphin and Latymer School and The Edinburgh International Television Festival.
