Stockton community leader Samuel Nunez faces child abuse charges

The leader of a prominent Stockton community org that aims to help vulnerable families in the San Joaquin area was arrested for several child abuse charges, including lewd acts with a minor under the age of 10.

Samuel Nunez, 46, of Stockton, was taken into custody May 21 on a probable cause warrant for several charges involving lewd acts with a minor, police said.

Manteca police confirmed Nunez was affiliated with the Fathers and Families of San Joaquin. His profile on the org website listed him as executive director on Saturday, but when KCRA checked the website Sunday his profile and picture had been taken down.

A social media post by the org later said that as of May 22, Nunez was "no longer employed."

Nunez founded Fathers and Families of San Joaquin more than 15 years ago "to make sure that love, culture and healing would begin to eradicate the poverty, violence and despair in Stockton and throughout the San Joaquin Valley," according to a section of the website that was still up on Monday.

"When Sammy Nunez returned to Stockton after surviving the trauma of gun violence and incarceration, he knew he wanted to be an active parent and role model for his children," the website says. "Yet he returned to a community that was under siege. Years of policies targeting and criminalizing the poor had harmed and dehumanized entire families and neighborhoods."

The org says that its programs work to "reduce recidivism among formerly incarcerated men of color, and for innovative youth development approaches focused on healing, culture and community leadership."

Manteca detectives took Nunez into custody after a traffic stop.

An initial investigation was launched April 23 by the Manteca Police Department. The victim, in this case, is a family member related to Nunez, police confirmed.

The abuse occurred over an extended period of time involving the same victim, police said.

No other details were released and this remains an active investigation. Nunez was booked at the San Joaquin County jail, and his bail was set at $2 million.

The Stockton Unified School District said in a message to parents that Fathers and Families of San Joaquin had worked with students at Hamilton, Nightingale, Monroe, Montezuma, and Van Buren elementary schools during the 2019-2020 school year.
