Rant: DAE find the whole "positive thinking", "letting go", buddhism, etc. to be stupid?

Post by TheRealSkeptic5000 »

I mean the whole "spiritual" eastern traditions of letting go of things, abandoning the desire, meditating, allowing things to pass, don't worry be happy, turning the other cheek, stoicism, don't worry about what others think, and so on. It's all passive bullshit that doesn't solve anything and may prevent people from chasing their goals and desires.

What is the goal of not desiring anything? Why would you ever want that? To get rid of suffering? Well you're also getting rid of pleasure. In fact, denying youself the pleasures of life, living in monasteries surrounded by old, bald men who spend their day praying is a form of suffering. Why is that a goal to begin with? Why is "nothigness" and "emptiness" a good thing? According to buddhism, you should also let go of your family and your own identity.

I particularly hate this phrase:
If your problem has a solution then...why worry about it? If your problem doesn`t have a solution then...why worry about it?
As if a person chooses to be worried and have a bad time on purpose. Can you imagine a bomb defusing team full of these douches? "Either the bomb will explode or it won't. Why worry?" Worrying, while unpleasant, gives you some pressure to stay aware and act upon something. You worry because you care. You care because you're human. You can't just "let go". And all of these "chinese" masters of wisdom usually have a condescending sense of moral superiority and subtle arrogance. Not to mention the crappy gurus who scam people and always speak with a smile on their face that makes them look like they're brown Santa on prozac. Getting laid. Not to mention that in reality they don't buy into any of that crap and they collect white Rolls Royces, like Osho.

To some extent, everyone cares about what others think of them. I'd very much like to see those "positive people" who "don't allow others to ruin their day" to live their lives if everyone around them hated them. Everyone who brags about being positive is usually an unhappy person.

Law of attraction, what a bunch of bullshit. If you attract what you think, then 13 year olds would be surrounded by women and OCD patients would be pretty much in hell.

Yep, your house was burnt to the ground, but don't let it ruin your day!

A soyboy story about a guy who smiles all the time. Smiling doesn't mean he's happy. Smiling can happen out of nervousness, thinking of something funny or it can even be fake. But no, this soyboy saw le wholesome chubberino smiling and that means he is an enlightened being.

Anyway, I had a bad day and I remembered the "letting go" advice. It didn't work. It's just pretending you don't care when you actually do; otherwise you wouldn't be trying to let go.
