My understanding regarding the 5k/mo price tag was not that it was for the data usage, I mean for real, VOAT was mostly text, all video and image hosted elsewhere. The bulk of that price tag was for DDOS protection. I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that money was all going to Cloudflare or whoever.

Fun fact puttitout was lying about monthly expenses. It doesn’t cost that much for cloud fare. Do you really think puttitout spent 50,000 to 80,000 USD out of his own pocket in the last eight months for this low traffic website?

Also don’t trust peace seeker he’s a known srs shill which I called out over two years ago. See my post history for proof.

$5000/mo was the rough figure back when Voat was running on Microsoft Azure, which is not unreasonable when considering the size requirements of Voat's servers, and combined with Cloudfare etc.
It was considerably less after the Port that Putt spent so much time on. I don't think he ever confirmed the figure. Probably between $1000 and $2000/mo. Which makes sense since this is a range a company that brings in thousands of dollars a month from free speech enthusiasts would be willing to spend as a sponsorship / for advertising.

Exactly how do you suggest we fight? Putt was handed Voat from Atko. Akto was honorable. He didn't like running the board, so he gave it to someone he trusted would do the job well.
Trust misplaced imo.
Has Puttitout offered to hand the site over to us despite us funding a large portion of it?
No.
He sold it as evidenced by the site code becoming proprietary.
Site code he had help from several Goats creating and porting.
So again, what do you suggest? A classaction lawsuit?
honestly, the voat code was shit. the database was whack.. THAT is why the site constantly went down, not DDOS attacks, this became very clear toward the end especially.. the site was broken beyond repair. databases can become so corrupted you cant fix them.. pretty sure based on the symptoms this was what was happening at voat...

The only ones who ever really helped with coding were Fuzz and Cyn. The rest of the users just helped test the code.
Some rights to Voat may have ended up being sold as part of PIA-deals, which may explain the switch to edon garden proprietary code. We all know PIA was bought out. That could have something to do with the fact that they eventually decided to default on their contract. We really have no sufficient reason to believe it is anything more than Putt says - that funding options have expired. Yes, there are tons of users offering to throw money at it - but even in the CC days we only managed to get pledges to cover $1500/month, and that was when costs were over $5000/month. And that's without considering how many people who make pledges but won't follow through or who give up after two months. Add to that the fact that CC isn't even an option anymore, and hasn't been for years, and you have a very serious difficulty - managing to coax, reliably, $2000ish a month, in CRYPTO, from a dying userbase. It just isn't viable. Putt recognized it isn't viable. That's why he said years ago Voat needed a sponsor to survive. Voat got a sponsor and he leapt at the opportunity because it was the only long-term viable option. The sponsor bailed and so Voat is screwed. Whether this conclusion that Voat has no options is ultimately true or not, it IS true that one can at least reasonably hold this position, as Putt does. So for him to make this decision is completely in keeping with his experience and knowledge of Voat's situation.
if voat was costing that much a month then something was seriously WRONG! I run a enterprise MSP, and we have global customers that REQUIRE 24/7 uptime have dozens of servers 40 or more.. and are a medical company, and they barely pay that much they're basically 40 times the size of voat. you can stand up forums for under 100 dollars a month, and sure if the bandwidth is exceeded it will cots overages, but 40 times that amount? nah something was wrong with that situation for sure.

being in the business I know that shits not right and I had just commentated that before reading your comment.. there is NO FUCKING WAY it costs that much, and the problem with voat based on the symptoms was not DDOS it was DATABASE schema issues!
