Sounds a lot like slavery, like feudalism; indentured servants bound to the land of their feudal lord, needing permission to leave the estate, working for his benefit and getting only a small part of what they produce.
The difference, of course, is that in feudalism people practiced their religion and had many days off. In communism, your religion was banned and there was no such thing as holidays. While feudal lords protected the peasants from brigands, in communism the government is the brigand.
