The only problem I have with Mr Welch's presentation is his choice of John Birch as a role model .. Birch went to China as a Baptist "missionary" in 1940 during the Second Sino / Japanese War, then after Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941 joined the US Army and became a military intelligence officer with the rank of Captain in the OSS the forerunner of the CIA, under the tutelage of Brigadier General Claire Lee Chennault leader of the legendary "Flying Tigers."

In 1941 a secret team of pilots known as the Flying Tigers crossed the Pacific Ocean on Dutch vessels posing as farmers, mechanics, and missionaries. Along with them was a shipment of 100 Curtiss-Wright P-40 Warhawks transported discreetly aboard third-country freighters. What few knew at the time was that these were American pilots with American planes, on what was supposed to be a very quiet mission with the Republic of China Air Force.

Following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor however everything changed, and the Flying Tigers would become a beacon of hope amid the grim developments in the Pacific. Over six months, the 99 American pilots (one had been denied a passport) would reportedly destroy 297 Japanese aircraft with only 14 losses of their own. Another such "missionary" whose correspondence became public in about the 1970's, disclosed he had murdered some 800 Chinese nationals in the same week .. ok we know the CIA tactic of employing a vast number of snitches a la Operation Phoenix in Vietnam, who would for payment turn in any of their compatriots who might maintain independent thought patterns .. we say that when the OSSers received a list, they rounded them up and used these JB missionary types who had been infiltrated into the country with US backing as described, to murder them.

This post caught my attention for some reason. I followed the link to The Vietnam War and the Phoenix Program - Computerized Genocide. The YT videos of the UK Granada TV documentary there have been taken down but can still be found at archive.org: A Question of Torture. It's only a half hour documentary so I watched it.

The weirdest thing - I realised that I must have seen it when it was originally broadcast in England in 1970. I would have been about 8 years old. I remember being shocked at the stories of prisoners being tortured by having wooden dowels tapped into their brains through the ears, and being thrown out of helicopters, and having lime thrown on them in "tiger cages", and being paralysed through the use of leg irons. 8 year olds shouldn't hear about such things. What's interesting looking back at this doco is the calm, sensible way these facts were recounted by the participants. We're so used to sensationalism today. They used to just give the facts, plainly and simply and clearly. I miss the old ways.
