It may be a privacy concern to the users who would prefer to stay in stealth lurk mode. Both outbox PM and last active status can indicate they recently lurked here :-)

Re the latter I believe selecting "Hide my online status this session" when logging in prevents that.

The last active status got ticked upon logout. The PM got marked as read on the sender side (the count was reduced) after the recipient opened the PM.
