Voat went down while I was posting this, fucking Putt. Anyway my 0.02:
Traditional forums/imageboards are gay and outdated
* All client-code is pushed from the server and can be changed any time.
* You can't see what the server is doing (like tracking your every move).
* All your PII (personal identifiable info) is sent to server with no fucks given.
* All your IPs are getting logged together no matter what.
* When the server shuts down, you are out on the street.
P2P apps are garbage
* They are really fucking slow
* protocol is complicated as fuck with all sorts of bugs
* caching is slow, propagation is shit, the whole thing is shit
* take down peering servers and the network dies
* if grandma can't figure it out then nobody will use it
We need to come up with a better solution. Going full p2p is not the answer. Client <-> Server is still king, It's simple, cheap and easy to scale. But assume the server will always be cucked by feds and let's develop a better web client, one that obfuscates all data sent to the server. Don't give the server anything, not even a cookie. Server should be strictly API. Thoughts?
Any voat clone will get comped, poal included. p2p apps are garbage. Need to develop something new.

The Pirate Bay is still running, most of the issues are overexaggerated by concern trolls. You don't hear "the fed runs TPB" because there is no incentive for trolls.

For all your concerns regarding privacy: use a VPN or TOR. Its your responsibility to stay anon on the web. You can use a privacy oriented browser or add-ons to eliminate fingerprinting stuff. But it would be convenient if a website like voat would provide an .onion service.armorofgod wrote: ↑Fri Dec 25, 2020 7:08 am We need to come up with a better solution. There are bulletproof concepts for hosting a website. Look at sites like dailystormer. It all depends how good the person behind the site is. There are even real clearnet criminal websites that are operating for years. One example was a German explosives forum. It was active for over 10 years and it took law enforcement with a team of around 1000 police officers and detectives to take the site down. They were not even trying to stay anon and posted photos and videos how they created explosives and how they did blow up stuff etc.
Modern website concepts are like this. The whole front end gets executed in the browser and is just doing API calls over websocket (or similar) to the server.Server should be strictly API.

This. If Putt were in charge of Poal or the others we're moving to, it could work. I've scratched poal from the list, going thru the options one by one.It all depends how good the person behind the site is.

Are original Reddit and Saidit P2P? The code for both is open source and available on Github. Said it seems to be an update/upgrade of the original Reddit with some fixes.
I have to ask, is it possible to just use this platform? Is this temporary or will be run out of space for posts soon? It seems like this is a good enough platform for what we do.
