Russian President Vladimir Putin said in April that the government should revise Russia’s approach in WTO by June 1. Now it seems that they’re moving ahead with it as Russia moves to withdraw from WTO and WHO.
According to Pyotr Tolstoy, the parliament’s vice speaker, Russia’s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, will consider the country’s possible exit from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a list of such agreements to the State Duma, and together with the Federation Council [upper house of parliament] we are planning to evaluate them and then propose to withdraw from them,” Tolstoy said on Tuesday.
Russia has previously terminated its participation in the Council of Europe, according to the vice speaker, and will soon leave the WTO and WHO.
“Russia withdrew from the Council of Europe, now the next step is to withdraw from the WTO and the WHO, which have neglected all obligations in relation to our country,” he said.Tolstoy also stated that the administration plans to review Russia’s international responsibilities and treaties, which now provide no advantage to the nation but directly harm it.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in April that Western states’ “illegal” limitations on Russian enterprises violate WTO regulations, and that the government should revise Russia’s approach in the organization by June 1.
The decision came as a result of broad Western sanctions placed on Moscow in response to its military operation in Ukraine, which began in late February. Since then, Russia has been subjected to over 10,000 targeted sanctions, ranking it the most sanctioned nation on the planet.
