Excuse a naive, progressive non-saffer, but how have they blocked the road? It looks completely deserted and well-kept as usual.

Nothing special about that section of road, other than its placement.

I just see some leaves and perhaps a few small branches, which shouldn't be a problem for any vehicles made after 1994. The vehicular golden years, as they were so fondly called by the car companies at the time: one could build any piece of shit and it would sell since it was an "anti-racist, anti-apartheid car". Indeed, everything sold better if it was marked as "anti-apartheid". I remember resurfacing the driveway: the price with apartheid was like 50% of a salary, but with anti-apartheidism built into the work, the new driveway only cost a few dollars.
