Austria Becomes First County In Western Europe To Reimpose A Full Lockdown, Bring In Mandatory Vaccination For All Citizens
Just days after announcing a lockdown on its unvaccinated population, Austria has today announced a full national lockdown for all citizens starting on Monday. Although the government claims that the lockdown of the vaccinated will end at midnight on December 13th, the lockdown for unvaccinated people will continue indefinitely. It was also announced that the entire population must be vaccinated by February 1st, 2022.
Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg has said that most stores will close and all cultural events will be canceled. He also initially said that all students would have to go back into homeschooling but Wolfgang Mueckstein, the country’s health minister, later contradicted him, saying that kindergartens and schools would remain open but asked all parents to keep their children at home if possible.
Schallenberg blamed the new measures on the country’s ‘low vaccination rate’.
“We have not succeeded in convincing enough people to get vaccinated.”
