Re: So Who's Winning?
No place measures up. Left Poal within 2 days after testing site, content, and capacity of the existing community. It wasn’t bad, but felt like an evolutionary step backward. It’s curious to see the handful of poal folks making strafing runs to round-up stray goats.
The real treasure is taking a pause and reviewing the old posts here. Some great linked sources. Amazing puzzle to put together. So much wisdom not fully appreciated because of the barrage of great posts. I re-read Putt’s closing post again. Some parts were prophetic. Voat was amazing.

So true. I too picked up on the 'conform or else' vibe early on. There were a small handfull on POAL that were welcoming, but the silent majority seemed to become rather passively-aggressive, and increasingly vocal within a few short days.AbalbalAndPhoenix wrote: ↑Thu Dec 31, 2020 4:44 am No place measures up. I was on voat for over 2 years just lurking and another 1.5 years with an account. In my experience, the golden age was a few years ago, but Voat was still strong even toward the end. It had that magic - the right combination of factors, but primarily the community.
Bluntly, its a better use of my time to soak up the collective wisdom of the past posts than move somewhere new, particularly when the over-arching criteria for most migrants is the continued ability to type “nigger” without immediate consequence.

Re: So Who's Winning?
I found some users to be unbelievably annoying, but the benefits of VOAT outweighed the morons that wasted digital ink. I would guesstimate that 85% of VOAT users were solid. I personally don't agree with blanket statements about groups of people, I prefer to size an individual up, and hold them accountable for their actions, not blame their group.AbalbalAndPhoenix wrote: ↑Thu Dec 31, 2020 5:52 am I was on voat for over 2 years just lurking and another 1.5 years with an account. I doubt anything more solid than VOAT/SEARCHVOAT exists out there.

And searchvoat is a step forward? Give me a break. What's curious are the people lamenting here about how Poal doesn't measure up, when it's the main site that most users have migrated to, and serves the same function. My main Poal gripe is the stupid policy on the downvote button, and hopefully the admin will stop being such a stubborn mule over a badly designed feature, but it's hardly a deal breaker. The people are there, the posts are there, the comments are there, that's what counts.AbalbalAndPhoenix wrote: ↑Thu Dec 31, 2020 4:44 am It wasn’t bad, but felt like an evolutionary step backward. PS: I was around Voat since nearly the beginning, and the "good old days" are some serious nostalgia glasses and the grass is always greener on the other side.

Would you have said the same thing if you had stepped off the Mayflower and seen America for the first time? "And THIS place is a step forward"? SearchVoat is a monumental step forward! Think of a hurricane that wipes out a section of the Southern United States, what happens afterwards? Rebuilding... Does someone just snap their fingers and everything automagicly like it was before?
You are wrong about POAL! But if that community is more to your liking, go there! Throw your lot in with the comfort blanket crowd. Their slogan is "Say what you want" but what they mean is "Say what you want as long as it conforms with the hive mentality of POAL"
When I first arrived here after I shut down my ID at POAL, I shared my experience there, and I was called out by someone that totally disagreed with me. A few days later, they agreed after they got nuked back to thr stone age for saying or doing something that they used to say/do on VOAT all the time.
It's easy to whine about how bad things are compared to how they used to be, but have you been paying attention to how much improvement has happened here since day one? I question whether @SearchVoat has sleapt, eaten, showered, or seen his woman since starting this project.
Go where you need to... but respect what's being done here.

It's not just rose colored nostalgia glasses and grass is always greener. Depending what you liked about Voat, old Voat really was superior to what it became. That didn't mean what it became wasn't still better than anyplace else available.chrimony wrote: ↑Thu Dec 31, 2020 11:59 amAnd searchvoat is a step forward? Give me a break. I really think Voat suffered by having several waves of reddifugees come and keep their reddit behaviors (including downvoting en masse to silence opinions with which they disagree). With the growth of the site that probably inevitable, but it made the place less useful as a serious place to have complex discussions.
For good or ill, Poal was somewhat of an attempt to move back to old Voat. But they are trying to do by punishing people for downvoting. That is just authoritarian conditioning. You get a bunch of pansies who follow the rule to be good little minions. Not a bunch of adults who act collegial because that is their actual way of getting along.

And now I have just lost my laptopseidoken wrote: ↑Thu Dec 31, 2020 12:59 amMy problem is that I lost Voat and 8Chan in a little over a year so I want something permanent at least as a backup.iSnark wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 11:48 pmI wouldn't say POAL is winning, I'd say that desperate VOAT users are scrambling to find a solution to a problem that doesn't exist! What we have here is VERY good! And I suspect that it will evolve back into what VOAT was. Have patience, enjoy the ride!chrimony wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 10:44 pm Poal is winning and it makes the most sense. Don't know why the thread "Is there real interest in a voat clone?" is so popular, as that is EXACTLY what Poal is. The only person I know who got censored was one dude who wanted to post hentai (which generally consists of depicting underage girls getting raped by monsters), and pushing the limit with the administrators to make his point. You can argue hentai shouldn't be censored as it's fiction, but US legal code currently disallows it.
Ruqqus is a censored Reddit 2.0 shithole run by leftists. This place is all right, but BB forum, eh. It doesn't fill the shoes of Voat. No other place has the traction of Poal.
Everything is falling apart
