I think the big advantage that an aggregator or a chan has is that it lets you scan topics really fast to find new discussions that you are interested in. When you go to bb forum you have to have a general idea of what you want to read about. Also those topics update extremely fast on chans and aggregators, this is really obvious when there's breaking news.

Mixed feels...like it and don't. The rep idea mentioned before is a great point just not used to this forum style but could become home. Beggars, choosers n all.

Voat is a lot easier to browse by subverses and threaded comments. SVF works kind of similar in term of listing, but comments are not threaded. So we would need to put context of other users in quoted text.

The reason for the transition sucks and I hate to lose Voat, but this is ultimately a step in the direction of sanity.
Interesting observations. A look at the ranking page (which I don't really understand the functional significance of) is a bit alarming, however, since a censorship-loving admitted pedo has already figured out how to dominate it.

I've used BB's for fishing and boat restoration and maintenance but not for news. Seems a bit more difficult to find new stuff -- especially as more sub-forums form. Some kind of front page would alleviate that. It's also not as easy to follow comment threads. But overall I kinda like it.

It shows who has made the most posts. The user "dominating" it simply has more posts. Not a big deal. Just shows who is being the most active.

Revisiting this thread.

I am slowly forming a theory that the way to re-decentralize the internet is to simply go back to the technologies we all used back when the internet was naturally decentralized.

In my conception, that is vBulletin forums, blogs, and lists of links to other places. Others advocate adding mailing lists.

A friend who knows better than I estimates for me that it would cost <$30/mo (updated estimate: $10) to self host an internet walled garden such as that. According to him it pretty much would cost what it costs to idle a windows 10 PC without a monitor.

This would create what I think of as a node in a decentralized mesh of communications and info dissemination.

I believe that in order to slay the dragon of modern hyper centralized leftist controlled society, we need workable and simple solutions, and I believe a shitload of vBulletin forums linking to each other in circuits is that way. It's simple, fast, cheap, and the bugs have been worked out of the technology for ten years. It's just a matter of doing it.

There could be 2895923840139503 undeplatformable websites hosting content and linking to each other in circles, at a cost of $10/mo per node.
